Driveway grading in Atlanta: local operators and what it costs

Driveway grading in Atlanta often means taming a steep gravel drive that washes out, rebuilding a base before new paving, or fixing an apron that dips where it meets the street. Hills, red clay and heavy rain shape the work. This page covers the right-of-way permit for the apron, slope and runoff, the land disturbance limits, the dig-safe notice, and a typical local cost.

What driveway grading costs in Atlanta

$1,500 to $6,000 for a typical 500 to 1,000 square foot driveway

Based on Pro Operator Network's national driveway grading cost guide, checked against published cost guides, and adjusted to the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell metro area using its 2024 price level from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (100.1, where the U.S. average is 100).

A typical range, not a quote. Your own price depends on your property and is set by whoever takes on your project.

The apron is the city's

Atlanta says any disturbance to the public right-of-way needs a permit, and installing or repairing a driveway apron or sidewalk is one of its examples. If the grading reaches the curb or changes the apron, add that permit to the plan.

Steep drives on clay

Many Atlanta lots sit on hillsides, and a sloped gravel drive on red clay washes out in channels after hard rain. Grading in a crown or a slight cross slope, adding water bars or a side ditch that turns runoff off the drive, and using crushed stone that locks together all help. The firm, sticky Piedmont clay makes a stable base once it is compacted dry, but it pumps up through stone if the work is done wet. A layer of fabric between the clay and the stone keeps the two from mixing, and compacting the stone in thin lifts rather than one thick pass gives a drive that holds its shape through the next wet season.

Runoff to the street

Atlanta's stormwater rules bar drainage facilities from discharging onto the surface of the public right-of-way and require runoff not to harm neighboring lots through concentrated flow. A drive graded to dump all of its water into the street or the neighbor's yard can run into those rules.

Size limits and Georgia 811

Regrading less than five thousand square feet is generally exempt from Atlanta's land disturbance permit, unless it is within two hundred feet of a stream bank, and the city's minimum erosion rules still apply. Cutting the drive with a machine needs at least three business days of notice to Georgia 811.

Give the length, width and steepness of the drive, the surface now and the surface planned, where water runs and where it washes out, whether the apron at the street is included, and any material to bring in or haul off.
