Stump removal in Houston: local operators and what it costs

After a tree comes down in a Houston yard, often after a storm, the stump is usually ground out below grade with a stump grinder in one visit. The questions are how deep to grind, what to do with the chips and the hole, and what may be buried near the roots. This page covers those points for Houston's heavy clay ground and gives a typical local cost to grind one stump.

What stump removal costs in Houston

$100 to $390 to grind one stump

Based on Pro Operator Network's national stump removal cost guide, checked against published cost guides, and adjusted to the Houston-Pasadena-The Woodlands metro area using its 2024 price level from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (98.6, where the U.S. average is 100).

A typical range, not a quote. Your own price depends on your property and is set by whoever takes on your project.

Grind it or pull it out

Grinding chews the stump and the top of the root flare into chips and leaves the deeper roots to decay underground. Pulling the full root ball with an excavator leaves a much bigger hole and tears up more of the lawn. Grinding is the usual choice unless a slab, patio or new tree is going in on that exact spot.

Clay and the grinding hole

Many Houston yards sit on clay soils that the USDA describes as very slowly permeable and prone to cracking when dry. A grinding hole filled with chips and loose clay holds water after rain and settles as the wood breaks down. Rake out most of the chips, refill with topsoil, and expect to add a little more after the first few rains before laying sod.

Texas 811 and buried lines

Stumps often grow right over a buried line, since the trench gave the roots soft ground. The Railroad Commission of Texas says homeowners must notify 811 two business days ahead, not counting weekends and holidays, before digging, even in their own backyard, and its pipeline program requires the call for digging deeper than sixteen inches. A deep grind should start with a locate request.

Street trees and permits

Houston protects large trees in the street and pedestrian area in front of a lot, and removing one takes written permission from the parks director. If a stump sits in that strip, check with the city before grinding. No city rule on grinding a stump in a private backyard was found, so for anything unusual, check with the City of Houston.

Storm season

Hurricane season runs from June through November, with its peak around early September. A storm that brings trees down leaves many stumps across a neighborhood at once, so posting the project soon after the tree is cleared away is the simplest way to get it on someone's schedule.

For your project post

List how many stumps there are and roughly how wide, how close they sit to the house, fences or a pool, whether surface roots should be ground too, whether chips go or stay, and the gate width.
