French drain and yard drainage in Tampa: local operators and what it costs

Standing water in a Tampa yard after summer storms is common, because much of the area is flat and the water table sits high. A French drain or a regraded swale can move water away from the house, but in Tampa the water has to end up somewhere the city allows. This page covers the drainage rules, the ground, the season, and a typical local cost for a backyard drain.

What french drain and yard drainage costs in Tampa

$20 to $50 a foot, or about $1,000 to $5,050 for a 50 to 100 foot drain

Based on Pro Operator Network's national french drain and yard drainage cost guide, checked against published cost guides, and adjusted to the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area using its 2024 price level from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (100.9, where the U.S. average is 100).

A typical range, not a quote. Your own price depends on your property and is set by whoever takes on your project.

Where the water is allowed to go

Tampa's stormwater standards say a site must be graded so runoff drains to the nearest public right-of-way or drainage facility without crossing onto or harming the property next door, and the city code calls for a permit for any work that changes the existing contours of a site. A drain that simply empties at the fence line can start a dispute with a neighbor, so settle where the outlet goes before anything is dug.

A high water table changes the design

The USGS describes the water table in west central Florida as generally close to the land surface, and the state's typical sandy soil is poorly drained, with water less than eighteen inches down for part of most years. A French drain only helps where it can empty to somewhere lower. In some Tampa yards the better fix is a shallow swale or raising a low patch, rather than burying pipe in ground that is already wet.

Timing

The rainy season in this part of Florida runs roughly from late May to early October. Installing in the dry months makes the digging easier and gives the new grade time to settle before the storms, but watching where water pools during one heavy summer rain is still the best way to plan the route.

Before digging

A French drain trench goes well past the ten inch depth that Florida's homeowner exemption allows, so place a Sunshine 811 request at least two full business days ahead. Private irrigation lines often share that part of the yard, so mark where yours run.

For your project post

Describe where water stands and how long it stays after rain, where it could be sent, the rough length of drain you have in mind, and whether downspouts should tie into it.
