Equipment Guide

What an Excavator Actually Does

An excavator is a tracked machine with a cab that rotates a full 360 degrees, a boom and stick, and a bucket on the end. Because the cab spins independently of the tracks, the operator can dig on one side and place the spoil on the other without repositioning the machine. Excavators come in a wide range of sizes, from mini and compact models narrow enough to fit through a standard side gate up to full-size machines used on commercial sites. Backhoe operators are included here as well: a backhoe is a wheeled tractor with a loader bucket on the front and a digging arm on the back, and it covers much of the same residential ground.

Excavation and trenching are the core of the work: footings and foundations, water and sewer lines, electrical and irrigation runs, drainage and French drains, septic systems, ponds and pool digs. Excavators also handle a large share of demolition, including small structures, concrete, old pools and foundations, and a lot of land clearing, from stump and root removal to boulders and dead trees. With the right bucket they will backfill and finish grading too.

On residential projects, a mini or compact excavator is often the difference between a dig being practical and not. Tight access, mature landscaping, a septic field, or a driveway you would rather not tear up all point toward the smallest machine that can still reach the depth you need. If you are in Winston-Salem with a drainage problem, a line to run, or a stump that is not coming out with a shovel, one operator in a correctly sized excavator will usually do less collateral damage, and cost less, than bringing in a larger crew.
